Long vistas with cross axis are recurring features of this Ben McMaster designed garden, with a largely formal layout. The garden includes massed herbaceous borders sheltered by high hornbeam hedges, a 16 meter-long water-lily pond, six formal box hedged rose beds and a potager garden. A meandering natural creek flows into a large, informal pond, surrounded by a boardwalk which leads through a New Zealand native area, providing several secluded relaxation spots. The surrounding undulating farm landscape is inhabited by Shetland ponies and a selection of designer chooks and ducks.
Take a guided tour with your knowledgeable hosts and find ideas and inspiration for your own garden! Enjoy an afternoon tea or a fully catered lunch from local artisans.
“Kay and Rudi are passionate about their North Canterbury country garden. They have worked together to turn half of their 2 ha property into a flourishing English-style garden, that has something for the whole family to enjoy.”
“It's very special to be able to enjoy the intimacy of a private garden as well executed as Breedenbroek. Kay & Rudi are generous hosts and their hands have sculpted the earth in the most magical of ways. Specimen plants will delight the plantsman while roses engage the casual guest to enjoy their scent and color. I've seen hundreds of gardens around the world and this one certainly justifies a re-visit when i'm back in New Zealand!”

We were warmly welcomed by Kay and Rudi the owners. The garden is beautiful with an amazing variety of planting. It's a large garden divided into rooms from formal herbacious borders to a boardwalk through a shady native glade and small lake. Children would enjoy seeing the miniature ponies. Some ladies enjoyed sitting in the shade by the swimming pool while our older members were able to sit inside after lunch in Kay's lounge. This was a real bonus since we have a few 80 year old members. There is plenty of seating inside and out for a large group. Kay served us with a finger food lunch including her delicious lemon drizzle cake. Many of us went home with the recipe. Kay is a chatty and welcoming host. Thank you also to her son for organising a group photo. A beautiful garden and well worth a visit.
